FIPP 2009 – One Week To Go!
Starting a week today is the FIPP World Magazine Congress, the annual conference for the magazine industry to debate where we’re all heading, where’s we’ve been, and – in a 2009 special! – how the hell we’re going to survive the recession.
It’s full of BAD IDEA pet topics like how the industry is working out what the internet is, advertising revenue and its alternatives, and innovations that will keep the industry vital and ongoing despite the current economic misery. It’s being hosted by the UK Periodical Publishers Association (PPA), and held in Old Billingsgate on the north bank of the Thames on May 5 and 6. And BAD IDEA is going to be there!
There’s an extremely impressive lineup of industry names appearing and speaking. Here are just some of the highlights:
- Carolyn McCall, Chief Exec of Guardian Media Group discussing “global economic and media trends” with John Smith, chief exec of BBC Worldwide; Aroon Purie, chairman of India Today; and William Kerr, chairman of Meredith;
- Matt Brittin, UK MD of Google, speaks on the currently rather touchy subject of Google’s relationship with print media;
- Former crack addict, self-confessed murderer, poet, forester, and irreverent publishing legend Felix Dennis on “innovating during a downturn”;
- Jane Bruton (Grazia ed), Dylan Jones (GQ ed) and Gillian Carter (editorial director of BBC Worldwide) discussing “sustaining editorial excellence”;
- Stevie Smith, chief exec of Future, moderating a discussion on squeezing out ad revenues, featuring folks from Unilever and Gucci;
- Christie Hefner, who recently stepped down as CEO of Playboy, knows all too well the challenges the web places on your publication – she’ll be moderating a discussion on developing digital presence with guys from Forbes, Lagardere and IDGVC;
- plus Will Whitehorn, president of Virgin Galactic; Jonathan Newhouse, chairman of Conde Nast; George J. Green and Cathie Black, chairman and president of Hearst respectively; Michael Heseltine, who’s a chairman at Haymarket these days; Mark Dinning, editor of Empire; and many, many more.
Find the whole list of speakers here, and the agenda for the two days of discussion here.
We’ll be Tweeting all the action as it happens, so sign up to the swank new Bad Idea Twitter feed! And there’ll be blogs each day with interviews, photos, commentary and analysis. See you by the free champagne!
