The Guardian’s Advice: Hike, Grow Salad, Buy Wine
Leading the Guardian’s Comment and Analysis section on Friday, you know, the Friday where the stock market plummeted nearly 700 points an’ all that, was Simon Jenkins suggesting we just go for a nice walk up Welsh mountain Cader Idris and forget all about this mess. “There is nothing else to do at times like this but head for the hills”. You go on ahead Simon, we’ll catch up when everything’s less fucked.
To all the 65-year-olds facing ten more years of work, or the children’s hospices facing closure, lazy suggestions that they just opt out of it all are hugely offensive. The Saturday Guardian continues the theme, with “The credit munch” – “Grow your own salads now, and you’ll be harvesting leaves – and saving money – until next year”. Sounds yum! Or why not try investing in wine and taking your house off the national grid. Huzzah!
