McDonalds Are Themselves Lovin’ It, ‘It’ Being Their Third Quarter Profits

While America does those organic food shops you get in posh boho areas on a massive, retail-park level with Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, it appears that when recession hits, most people are going to forego the alfalfa sprouts in favour of the $1 cheeseburger.

McDonald’s is the latest mega-brand to post its 3rd quarter sales figures, which are 6.2% higher than last year. Apparently its the dollar menu that’s bringing it all in, as people start to feel the pinch. And it’s not just in America – us lot are heading Arches-ward more than ever before, helping create a record rate of 100m McDonald’s customers a month.

The $1 double cheeseburger is the most popular item, but its future in a world of rising meat prices is uncertain, meaning its price could skyrocket to $1.19. Well cry me a river – that’s only 76.0466p at current rates. Not exactly likely to drive people towards the locally-sourced okra.

Whole Foods on the other hand had a terrible third quarter, with net down 31% to 24 cents a share. So with the downturn in the economy, we can expect a downturn in the health of the poor. Forget Rotherham, Jamie Oliver, America needs you!

You can’t have a $1.19 cheeseburger – $1 is the limit, that’s the whole concept. They’re just going to have to make it smaller – recession size – or something.

  2. Andrew Says:

Hummm…. well @ $3.39/lb a Quarter pound patty w/out Antibiotics or Hormones would work out to .8475 cents… of course, you still have to grill it yourself. ;)

I think it’s largely down to perception. The healthier options are seen as a middle-class luxury. When people feel that the future is uncertain, McDonalds will seem the more prudent option.
